segun bucknor fell in love with american soul music as a student at new york’s columbia university. otis redding, wilson pickett, sam cooke and ray charles hadn’t made much of a splash in africa at the time and when bucknor returned to nigeria in 1968, he was determined to bring the sound to a wider audience.
the result was brand of afro-soul that in turn became a proto-type of afrobeat. with his bands, the assembly and the revolution, he released a few politically charged tracks, but even with his energetic dance trio, the sweet things, turning up the heat, bucknor couldn’t compete with fela kuti.

bonnie prince billy aka will oldham veröffentlicht mit “best troubador” eine hommage an einen seiner ewigen helden, country- und folk-ikone merle haggard. das werk von haggard begleitet bonnie prince billy nun schon seit mindestens 25 jahren. so coverte er nicht nur bei seinem ersten öffentlichen auftritt einen haggard-song. auch in den folgenden jahre seiner karriere bezog sich oldham immer wieder auf das werk und wirken haggards. das vorhaben, das nun im mai erscheinende album aufzunehmen, begleitete oldham schon eine ganze weile. das ziel war es, an der uralten tradition teilzuhaben, folk-songs an die nächste generation weiterzutragen. fast legte oldham das projekt auf eis, als er im april 2016 vom tod merle haggards erfuhr. statt in einem studio in nashville aufzunehmen, zogen sich oldham und seine mitmusiker zugunsten einer familiären aufnahme-atmosphäre in ein heimstudio zurück. so wurde dem andenken haggards werk durch besondere wärme und intimität würdevoller tribut gezollt.
die songs auf “best troubador” stammen aus allen schaffensphasen haggards. angefangen bei seinem 1967er album “i am a lonesome fugitive” bis hin zu seinem 47. album von 2011, “working in tennessee”, ist es allerdings kein simples best-of geworden, stattdessen kuratierte oldham die songauswahl entlang seiner persönlichen favoriten aus merles katalog.

globe-trotting production heavyweight quantic collaborates with rising talent nicola cruz on an epic remix of puente roto from cruz’s debut album prender el alma. following the release of prender el alma (2015) and nicola cruz’s imminent global takeover, the young ecuadorian called on a crop of producers for remix duty. serendipitously, quantic, one of nicola’s inspirations, answered the call in his signature way with a bass-heavy, jazzy and psychedelic display of genius that will move any dance-floor that thrives on global beats. the release comes on limited edition 180g 12” vinyl - the b-side lovingly etched with a design.

seasoned memory athletes will no doubt recall the turbo’s past affiliation with the former soviet union (proxy, tiga tigayevich khristorozhdestvensky), and recent geopolitical developments have prompted the label to once again hedge its bets. our a&r team spent countless hours sifting through layer after layer of russian underground music, a shocking amount of which turned out to be fake soundcloud accounts from producers based in florida. in fact, our best intelligence suggests that dimitri veimar may be the only person making music in russia today. for the 30 minutes a day he is not trading in politically moderate twitter-bot futures, veimar produces dark, raw-dog electro. he has already released music with omnidisc and renate, so it makes little sense to us why we have to communicate with him via a mole in the canadian embassy in moscow, which is further complicated by the fact that the mole is also an aspiring dj/producer whom we have to keep happy at all costs. you have no idea how much has been sacrificed in order to shield you from the realpolitik of international dance music.

new one on a colourful storm from soon-to-be-known artist tackle. insane breaks and bass programming over humorous sample placement. but theres nothing funny about its take-no-prisoners approach. one of the heaviest releases weve heard in a long time. fans of a colourful storm will recognise grondman from moopie’s mix on dommune late last year. vital sales points: fourth release on australian label a colourful storm first release since benzedrine, which was number 20 of resident advisors 2016 top tracks premiered on dommune in tokyo last october. richie hawtin’s favourite artist. (probably).

* limited edition gatefold 2lp set with printed inner sleeves. * following their surprising debut on cassette tape in past february, magamura put out the vinyl version of supernaturals. comprised of eril fjord and laurine frost, the hungarian duo have carved out their reputation through live performances at renowned festivals and venues like arma in moscow, combining the formar’s indie aestheric and the electronic music prowess the latter has proved on work for the nervmusic imprint. despite their huge influence from the 70-80s experimental music, supernaturals is not so much retrospective as ominously dystopian. it captures and distils their well-known improvisational mutability into a testament to their promising potential, which will stand the test of time. this is kebko music’s first instalment on vinyl. following our tradition of carefully-wrought artwork, the lp comes in a gatefold sleeve designed by damien tran. * kebko music is tokyo-based akiko kiyama’s independent music label focusing on releasing avant-garde music which is not bounded by any specific genres but embraces the whole range of techno, experimental music, field- & live-recordings and classical music. the label owner established her name by richie hawtin featuring her track in his well-known de9 transitions mix in 2005. since then, her music style has gradually changed to explore the edge of electronic music. the core of the label is based on small handcrafted editions of cassette tapes. it aims to give a chance for all of artists and listeners to explore their musical experience and creativity.

almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production. using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music. the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, pt.3 is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one. onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the far east and the producer s own development over the preceding 10 years.

rudolf c embarks on the third expedition into the exotic lands of palm trees and blue skies with his mesmerising and pensive ‘goin good’ ep on lost palms. expedition three features four jams packed full of utopian soundscapes and drum machine filled sequences. free your mind and your body will follow.

it’s safe to say this release marks heist’s most international endeavor so far: next up we’ve got alma negra, 4 guys with roots in portugal, cabo verde, italy and spain, hailing from switzerland. they’re putting out an african influenced ep with german detroit afficionado soulphiction involved for a remix. afro lovers will probably know alma negra because of their great work on highlife, sofrito or basic fingers and we’ve been in touch with them for a long time to make this release happen. their 3 originals are a great showcase of their skills, blending traditional african music with contemporary house and techno.

bunkr enslave dust-coated synthesizers, dilapidated drum machines and rusty fx boxes to craft 4/4 tunes for their impatient overlords. their vision is clear they will make techno, they will make house, they will make electronica, and you will listen and dance. its not yet clear if bunkr is the work of one frenzied human or many lazy individuals but we do know one thing - the ringleader is one james dean, who previously released as lost idol on labels such as pork recordings, nature, final frontier and cookshop. following a prolonged spell of writing music at slow tempos, dean initiated bunkr as a reactionary desire to speed things up. too much time had been spent just sitting around - it was time to stop sitting and start dancing. true to their vision, here we have cloud chaser, a bubbling jam backed with a huge remix from shan, who flips the mix with dramatic strings, sprinkles of magic dust and massive amen breaks. no less impressive is junos revenge, a track youd turn up on your headphones while taking a nice afternoon stroll on the moon, on a sunny morning after a long interplanetary rave. igor tipura delivers the rework, complete with a marching percussion workout and acid chemtrails that will send you right back to 1993.
